Guys I don’t want to go back to Austin. I really don’t. I have the best job I’ve ever had in the worst city I’ve ever lived in, and I don’t know what to do. Being away I feel so much more peaceful, energetic and free.

To answer the remote work question….. maybe. I think if I grin and bear it until the hardware we are working on is more mature, it might be feasible. What my coworkers say is different—this is my assessment based on me wanting to do the best work I can for the best job I’ve ever had 😭

If you could change a single thing for the better about your non-work environment in Austin — what would that be?

We had the same feeling when we visited. Spent 3 weeks there at an Airbnb in different areas to get a feel of it but it just wasn’t happening. Wife is from Ohio so big change as well. Really liked Mueller but that’s about it. Everywhere else felt less safe and had issues. Hence decided on OC.

Is suburb and drive a realistic option? Obvious remote would be great

Sorry to hear that. I’m in Austin for a few weeks and my experience has been great. Staying in Central Austin and often driving to East Austin (10 mins away). Downtown is also 10-15 mins drive. Maybe an intra-city move could radically change your experience. Def requires a car tho.

Is all of Texas off the table? If they can do remote but you like the state/$ — San Antonio has no business being as cute as it is. Or come to Vegas for non-biased reasons. 😏

I don’t envy your situation friend. I usually tend to optimize for my day-to-day life as I just don’t feel set up to succeed otherwise, but you’re already doing your best work
