How much is too much to spend on groceries? The USDA does produce a monthly reference point for this. They’ve created 4 different food plans that represent a well rounded diet: thrifty, low, moderate, and liberal cost, and provide updated data monthly as to how much it costs to follow those plans, per person in household Pictured is the latest report — January’s totals reported on in February. Thrifty is in its own table https://www.fns.usda.gov/research/cnpp/usda-food-plans/cost-food-monthly-reports

Wow. Food costs are so high in the US. I buy organic food and generally don't even look at prices and have it all delivered to my doorstep weekly. Surprisingly, I would probably be ok in the thrifty column. (in Germany, so hard to compare)

Almost $1600/mo for my family on liberal plan, sounds about right. And by liberal, we don't eat like yuppies or anything. I mix it up between the food co-op and grocery outlet, we go out to eat once a month, have fresh ingredients for good meals, feeding a growing teenager. 15 years ago we were feeding a family of 3 on like $300-400 a month.
