Does a founder have to be a good IC? Or is it enough to be a talker and a seller?

it depends, but for tech companies rare to not have a founder who can spike on 1-2 things really well

I think at first yeah! Cuz you don’t have a team. Lots of founders I work with doing their first hire have problems letting go and being able to delegate then consequently hire Post 10 ppl u become more of a talker (to ur team) and seller (founder led sales)

Anyone can be a founder. To be a successful and happy one though I think you need to be an above average IC at something. I think that something could be BD/sales or marketing though and doesn't have to be engineering or product

Think they have to understand the product very deeply, hard to do that without having built/spent years working on something similar, but with that expertise built could delegate

based on personal experiences sales people don’t make good tech founders and usually tend to be mercenaries chasing a win in any form

Agreed with @dwr.eth for tech companies that are code/product heavy. For other types of companies (CPG, for instance) being a seller *is* being an IC.

Most founders have to become great sales people Just make sure you’re filling other time with Operations + raising + testing the product and you’ll be golden

IMO difficult to communicate the vision to team / understand future-proofing and how to adapt without having a deep product understanding - this can be the what/why/how without needing to have the technical expertise to actually build it
