What’s interesting to me about Partiful is not the Palantir past of the founders but their public insistence that they don’t have fiduciary duties They do! I don’t care what they say, they do! They do in fact have a responsibility to recoup capital. They aren’t a charity. I dislike this so much although I have benefited from it. Over time I think this type of posture makes for irresponsible founders and consumers inured to the idea that they “deserve” free lunches

Agreed, this is my least favorite thing about them. If you’re not going to be serious about building a business, don’t raise money.

Let me steel man their argument I don’t think they’re saying they should never make money, but that the service standalone has too small a TAM for venture backing. They clearly don’t have it all figured out yet Discord wasn’t obvious. With how much time people spent there, they found ways to personalize the experience for money I’ll give them some breathing room to try

There’s a fine line between being disruptive and being dismissive of responsibility. Founders playing the ‘no fiduciary duty’ card might think it’s edgy, but it signals a deeper issue of accountability in startup culture
