This is obviously speculative. But what do you think of the case spelled out here for Canada joining the EU? The short of it is that if the EU creates a multi-tiered membership that has some countries in an inner fiscal union and others outside that bloc with trading membership closer to what exists today, that Canada might fit in that second tier. It’d obviously help solve the EU’s shortage of domestic mineral reserves. https://youtu.be/kV9OfUGiExQ?si=hnBIPgjxq9N6O3L0

Makes a lot of sense. Could also see a lot of the global south like NZ and Chile being good partners for this

What would be the specifics of it though. Would they have to use the Euro and be under the umbrella of the ECB. Would they have to accept the rulings of European Courts? Would Canadians be happy having their legislation and laws determined by Brussels? How about tax rises to support European pensioners, some of whom get to retire earlier? This seems more like a thought exercise in tribal alignment rather than a serious consideration.

hopefully just a strategic partnership rather any type of “inner fiscal union” god help us if we become even more like the EU with everyone earning $30k and living in 300sqft apartments

It’s weird that there seems to be some conception of pan-western unity outside of endorsement and support from the US. Conceptually will never make sense and pragmatically doesn’t make sense for now

Always thought of Canada as Europe light. Would be a good fit.

Speculative as well. Of course Canada has to minimize its dependency with UA in terms of trades. A debate for decades here. I don’t see Canada as an official member of EU but maybe as a advanced partner like Morocco (Pan-Euro-Mediterranean) for example

How is the second tier different from a free-trade agreement? Such an agreement could include lots of stuff beyond trade (or it might be separate agreements). Problem with the free trade stuff is that it needs to be ratified by every EU member so it’s theoretical at best.

Remember reading an article (can’t find) about the Commonwealth nations forming a powerful trading bloc esp since they have pretty similar governance. So EU joins the Commonwealth… 😇

This scenario might be a stretch, but it’s an interesting thought exercise. A second-tier membership for Canada could ease the EU’s mineral shortages if the political will ever aligns on both sides.
