I don’t hold people accountable for their ancestors’ sins, but the head of Palantir in Britain being the *grandson of Oswald Mosley* is an eyebrow-raising detail. https://www.politicshome.com/news/article/palantir-boss-interview-keir-starmer-gets-ai

We’re not doing photos of her on social, but my little daughter Eve was born healthy and strong and, frankly, not so little. Eating and pooping nonstop. I’m obsessed with her. I knew parents always said it was unlike anything else and I brushed that off as hyperbole until that first moment I heard her cry last night. Her mother is recovering well. I’m very exhausted but thankfully we’re on the Upper East Side and there was a bagel place with excellent lox open at 6 this morning when I stumbled out to gather our first real meal in more than day.

Still awaiting my daughter’s arrival, but in the meantime I’ve made my debut in The Atlantic. I wrote about the looming boom in geothermal energy, one of the few renewables generating as lots of excitement among both Republicans and Democrats. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2025/04/geothermal-energy-boom/682291/

The economy is tanking but my wife is scheduled to be induced this evening and give birth to our daughter, our first child. So I busted out this 26-year-old pu’erh I’ve been saving for a special occasion. L’chaim. /tea

Definitely! There’s still lots of badly misinformed reporting from otherwise good media outlets. For example, decent reporters in NYC misrepresented the risk of tritiated water from the shuttered Indian Point nuclear plant as “radioactive waste dumping into the Hudson.” Obviously that language conjured images of three-eyed fish in The Simpsons. But in reality it’s a tiny amount of a harmless radioisotope, which is in large quantities in our water from trashed red exit signs and shooting star dust than from nuclear plants.

This is a good question. I think the nuclear industry has struggled with its PR. It’s also faced decades of stagnation where PR wasn’t really necessary bc new reactors weren’t being built. That’s now changing.

The U.S. almost had nuclear waste recycling. Jimmy Carter killed the project after India became the first country after the signing of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty to get the bomb. Recycling capacity can help increase the ability to enrich uranium to weapons grade material, so it was a sacrifice to show America’s commitment to nonproliferation. Ronald Reagan lifted the ban soon after, but the damage was done. No one wanted to invest billions of dollars into something the U.S. government might prohibit.

Nuclear waste can be recycled — the French, Japanese and Russians do — and there are a bunch of companies aiming to do just that in the coming years.

After a month on Warpcast, I have decided to stick around and keep posting here. Here's why: 1. The community is politically diverse, civil and curious As a reporter, posting on X and Bluesky can feel repressive in that both platforms are filled with people who want their biases flattered and take offense when their priors are challenged. Many of you here seem earnest, intellectually omnivorous, and willing to engage with viewpoints respectfully without assuming bad faith when opinions diverge or being performative. 2. It feels like an older version of the internet Maybe it's the cartoon avatars or the anonymity, maybe it's the fact that so many of you work on stuff I couldn't begin to understand how to code. But there's this pre-Facebook vibe here that is really cool. It's even made me appreciate crypto's potential beyond scams and crime. 3. Friends! Fun! I can't remember the last time I forged bonds with people I don't know IRL about things other than work. And what can I say? I'm a loyal guy.

This is a good chart showing from where America’s reactor fleet gets its fuel. Canada has a lot of leverage here.
