One thing that’s sad about Meiji Restoration is that many of the revolutionaries and visionaries were the ones that were often killed / assassinated first - the survivors were the real power brokers, or just lucky

honestly too many to list and don't feel like looking them up. I'd say the fastest way to get into any of these topics these days is honestly a youtube videos / channel (Historia Civilis, Wars & Generals, Filaxim Historia	, SPQR Historian, Dovahatty for the memes)

Agreed. Some of my other favs:

Oguri Tadamasa - On the Tokugawa Bakufu side, but was very forward looking and forward thinking, helped build the foundations of what is the naval shipyards in Yokosuka Shipyards today but contracting the French Govt to build ships (while Choshu and Satsuma sided with the English)
