I noticed that open source seems to come natural for folks based out of Berlin. Any theories as to why? When I was hiring applicants out of Berlin had a notable open source contributions. Their projects are often well structured with clear instructions for contributions. Many open source / paid hosted products.

Extrapolate the social dynamics and purist ideals of the original Berlin techno music scene to devs. The ETH hackathon this year during Berlin blockchain week was super well designed, with true from the heart focus on identity, privacy and decentralisation.

My impression is that Berlin has strong hacker culture and cyberpunk roots, which could be an explanation.

(1/2 ) Great observation! Recently chatted with @nintynick.eth about this. Decentralization and Open Source fit perfectly into Berlin's narrative. Berlin's culture is big time defined by it's anti mainstream, anti-capitalist thinking that emerged in the 90s after the wall came down. Imho this culture emerged out of necessity not romanticism. Berlin is poor compared to other German cities due to the economic vacuum after the collapse of the USSR. After the wall came down the city was "ON SALE" for foreign investors and people from the West – like southern Germany where I am from. What do you do when you see that others take what was yours but is not yours anymore because the new system (Capitalism) now says it's not yours because you didn't pay for it? You start swimming against the tide... (tbc in the next cast)

My theory is that it is so cheap to live here that u can actually focus on missions and don't have to make ur life all about profit maxxing. I pay 600 EUR warm for my OK apartment. Public transport, etc. is all very cheap too. I have very low costs of living, I can afford to be radical online (and in open source)

You're onto something here, I think @timdaub.eth and @lefteris.eth are also from Berlin, both building heavily on OSS
