Two opinions I’m starting to form:

1. In the future most data (80%) will be stored in one or more decentralized protocols

2. Those protocols will not use the EVM in any way

Bullish crypto, bearish ETH

Protocols don’t need to use the EVM for eth to benefit they can use L2s with their own custom VMs that ultimately settle on eth L1

I think the ecosystem / hive mind of EVM is more harmful than EVM itself to be honest. From the tech side the EVM just wasn’t purpose-built and I’m more bullish on things made with a use case in mind

Why not an L2 that abstracts evm away from users? Wouldn’t that benefit from more reliable long term security and bigger network effects?

GREAT question. Currently I think chains will be broken down by use case, not apps.

Farcaster enables seamless payments via USDC, but not on the same protocol they store casts with. Payments and storing lots of text documents are very different use cases with different technical needs. There’s not much reason for them to use the same protocol.

That said I think the only thing EVM has going for it in the payments category is its momentum.

EVM is the MySpace of our industry, the only thing keeping it afloat is momentum and network effects (I don’t underestimate either though). It’s been over-engineered with excessive abstraction and dependencies.

This aligns with what I’ve been seeing too. The future of decentralized data feels more IPFS/Filecoin/Ceramic/Urbit than anything EVM-native. Curious: what’s your thesis for why EVM won’t play a role at all?

The Ethereum ecosystem has been right curved to death. Its dependency hell but in a conceptual way and diverts too far from both users and devs common experiences

If you don’t believe #1 I’m not sure how you can work in crypto. Decentralized data storage objectively more capable it just needs to be cheaper and faster to make the feature set worth it. Farcaster is the perfect example of what’s possible

I don’t think it’ll be one protocol, but I do think IPFS is a great example of what many of them might look like!

It will be IPFS. CIDs provide all the verification blockchains need while providing the most amount of flexibility related to persistence, decentralization, speed, etc.
