what are the best hotels/places to stay in SF that are in relatively nice/walkable areas? does this exist?

It barely exists, but for nice/walkable areas would second the Inn @ the Presidio and add The Fairmont Heritage Place @ Ghirardelli Square -- yes if you walk one way it is Fisherman's wharf, but if you walk the other way it is Fort Mason and Crissy Field.

Mostly doesn't exist, unless you want to be downtown/union square. 

The Clancy is in Soma at least, as is Hotel Via.

nob hill, russian hill, presidio, north beach

the only places I would consider walking (and do) in SF proper (bernal heights doesn’t count) are pac heights, marina and presidio. I don’t even like driving my car through most of the downtown-ish mid city areas like soma and union square, which I’ve collectively deemed the apocalypse zone.
