The shift from podcasts being about audio to video is underpriced.

Do you think it's the video component that is important - or the network effects and user-muscle-memory of the delivery channel (YouTube)?

I believe discoverability plays a big roll as to why Youtube is so dominant here. Youtube still has a long tail effect & its algo plays a huge part in its reach to a vast audience. I also come across a lot of audio only podcasts on youtube, which I'm sure makes up for a decent chunk of that number in contrast to video

Reminds me of https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/daily-news-podcasts-building-new-habits-shadow-coronavirus. β€œNews” made up 30% of top podcasts in the US in 2020, with a third having been created in the last year. Perhaps the growth of certain kinds of podcast format content lead to the increase in video.

Every video podcast I turn off the video and listen to audio. Sadly, video has too much cognitive overload. podcasts work as a β€œbackground” for multitasking!

I need video to quickly do a body language test on a person. Group podcasts is only comprehensible in video as audio simply can get confusing. Video also gives the vibe context of the person. I do ask when people are not even looking at the video, and I do wonder how much first-few-episodes need video fulfils.

I'd like to see the age breakdown; what age groups use what platform and devices the most. I think I know the answer, but still curious.

I never got hooked on any audio only podcasts but have enjoyed some on YouTube. I wonder if it's the additional connection I feel watching the speakers communicate, as I definitely feel more engaged while listening/watching them.

If I'm sitting on my desk I shift to YouTube if I know they are on YouTube and for some reason I feel it's important to see an interviewee face. But most consumption is still via pocketcasts. It syncs everywhere and has dedicated podcast features YouTube still doesn't have.
