Who else is excited about the torpedo bats in baseball? Not just for baseball, but for what they mean for innovation, as I write in a new short essay. https://om.co/2025/04/04/a-torpedo-bat-of-innovation/

Torpedo Bat is a living testimony that innovation through a combination of data, design, and science can happen in products that are even a century old. I have seen this before. My friend Ian Schon did this when he designed and made his Monoc nib. There are so many new ways to do old things, as long as one puts their mind to it! !

I am so happy that Warpcast exists. This is a pace of sanity in the middle of social media chaos and endless bullshit.

FWIW, I just finished writing this weekend. Here is yet another blog post, this time about Google's growing irrelevance. Google has entered its middle-aged mediocrity phase. Once the pioneer of innovation, it’s now bogged down by bureaucracy and an advertising-driven model. Here’s my take on why Google risks becoming irrelevant in the AI era. https://om.co/2025/03/29/the-mediocrity-of-modern-google/

23andMe is imploding, and you should do whatever you can to protect your genetic data. At the very least, try to delete it. Californians can delete their 23andMe data, according to the California State District Attorney. Here is how to delete your data. blog.om.co/2025/03/23/h...

So, with Claude offering websearch, it seems “search” is becoming a feature and this is not good for Google unless they do something, quickly. New piece https://om.co/2025/03/20/has-search-become-just-a-feature/

China's EV dominance isn't just about cars—it's about building an entirely new tech ecosystem. China is using EVs to create its own tech stack that could challenge US digital supremacy. The US Tech Stack has a real competitor. My latest for my newsletter, CrazyStupidTech https://crazystupidtech.com/archive/chinas-ev-boom-is-bad-for-ustech/

No one seems to have developed an "AI" based app for "fantasy baseball." So many of the fantasy baseball websites are so bad. Search sucks, most importantly, the queries lead to bad answers. This seems to be an obvious opportunity!

You don’t need a lot of light to look resplendent. I see this car on my daily walk. And a couple of days ago, the light was just right. And that inspired the capture and the edit. Made with my iPhone 16 Pro Max and edited with @lightroom

Apple Intelligence: more show than substance? John Gruber's scathing critique of Apple's recent AI demos hits home. As someone who was initially enthusiastic, I have to admit - the results are disappointing. Apple's trapped by its own success, desperately trying to appear relevant in AI while forgetting what made it great: shipping real, working products. The "good enough" approach won't cut it anymore, especially when competitors' AI offerings, despite their flaws, are leaving Apple in the dust. https://om.co/2025/03/13/apple-intelligence-fud-dud-or-both/

What Failure Taught Me Ten years ago, I had to shut down GigaOM, a company that carried my name and, for a long time, I thought was my legacy. Looking back now, I can see how that spectacular, public failure transformed me in ways I couldn't have imagined at the time. The first lesson? Time really is the greatest healer. A told me it would take at least three years to get over such a loss, and he was right. By year five, I had become a better person precisely because I had failed so publicly. Failure taught me the empathy I needed to become a better investor and mentor to other founders. After all, unless they're psychopaths, most founders are simply trying their best in imperfect situations to achieve perfect outcomes.

I have had a love-and-lost-love affair with the MacBook Air. And yet, I own a MacBook Pro instead. However, when it is time to buy a new machine, the new M4 Air however presents a tempting alternative. The new "is it really blue color" is pretty cool too. Some quick early impressions. https://om.co/2025/03/11/the-new-m4-macbook-air/

Every time I see an old telecom like deutschetelekom announce a deal with pretty hot young startup I am reminded of a great British comedy series, Men Behaving Badly. If you have not seen it, then you should. Also how did the deal with Brain.ai pan out team DT?

Watching the events out of Oval Office it has become pretty obvious that: 1/ Everything is reality TV. 2/ Attention trumps everything. (No pun intended.) 3/ The attention virus because of social has transformed society more than the other virus. Not making any judgement, just some thoughts.

The real challenge of AI-first social network is that a large platform like Meta is going to turn it into an "ad" network. Present IG and FB are mostly AI, mostly ads (or ads-adjacent) and very little social "network." In other words, we will get a AI-first Social Media Platform, with faux-network dynamics.
