Why is it so expensive to bridge to Base? Anything on the roadmap to decrease the cost? (I only have $40 in ETH in a wallet but a bunch of USDC but I can't move it to Base because it costs $67.)

it's expensive gas wise to actually do the L1 bridge flow (this is the case for all L2s). cheapest thing is to send directly from an existing source of L2 liquidity (e.g. Coinbase). working on making this better.

It's expensive because it uses the Optimism Bedrock bridge contracts to lock tokens on L1 and send a message, which is gas intensive You could use a liquidity network like Synapse, which would be cheaper in gas costs because it has less biz logic, but they'll take a cut of the transfer since it's more like OTC

afaik anything that incorporates CCTP or CCIP settles that for cheap but I do not know who. I usually user LiFi's Jumper Exchange for such stuff which aggregates routes—at least as a short term solution.

two decent options: - use a CEX that supports Base (e.g. Coinbase) as a “bridge” - use Orbiter if it’s not a huge amount, security is iffy but it works

Was just about ready to impulsively start a new channel but now I gotta pump the brakes and get the bridging figured out. :)

Digging layerswap.io for L2 to L2 transactions, helping to get away from Main net… You can always on ramp to optimism from Coinbase

L2s will become the first entrance point for users, and no one will interact with L1 so this hopefully won’t be an issue. I also think interop is key here such that once you’re on any superchain chain, you’re defacto “in the superchain” vs needing to worry about bridging etc

also, jumper.exchange & orbiter.finance do decent work, both much cheaper than the quote you referenced in your vast

an alternative maybe not mentioned by others - I have my main wallet plugged into Coinbase Wallet & just top up Base ETH from the buy function in there, using fiat. Runs me a couple / few dollars usually.

What site are you using? Most don’t use the most gas optimized flow :(

I send eth to Coinbase and I send it back to my wallet, before I send it lets me choose the network. You can select Base or other networks to avoid the bridge fee. This has to be done on Coinbase exchange not Coinbase wallet.

I used sideshift dot ai to bridge for less than $1 from btc the other day. Btc fee was expensive too though

To encourage you to send it to the CB CEX then transfer for free to Base.

Agree, I wanted to buy a farcat nft, I chose the one I liked, but I'm one of those "MC Donald's btc meme guys" I went to bridge, but had to abandon it sadly after seeing how much it would cost and not having the amount of eth to cover it
