Why is it so expensive to bridge to Base? Anything on the roadmap to decrease the cost?

(I only have $40 in ETH in a wallet but a bunch of USDC but I can't move it to Base because it costs $67.)

I send eth to Coinbase and I send it back to my wallet, before I send it lets me choose the network. 

You can select Base or other networks to avoid the bridge fee. 

This has to be done on Coinbase exchange not Coinbase wallet.

This was Coinbase app, not Coinbase wallet app 

Click ethereum, then click send and the screen pops up with network options

How do you get to this screen? Once I select the send to address, it just asks to confirm the amount and then offers to send. I don’t see anywhere to select the network (it’s preselected as Ethereum on the transaction preview screen).

kinda sad that this is the most efficient way tho
