Anyone consider buying a Rivian worried about bankruptcy risk given dependency on software updates?

Considering buying the smaller SUV if it makes it to production. It's hard to stay in business losing 10's of thousands per vehicle though. The R1T is cool, but I really don't need a large truck! Are you thinking of getting one?

Amazon will buy them in liquidation and you'll have updates for life served by AWS and you will be happy.

R2 will 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds. I don’t really think about anything else.

It's a good truck and a valuable brand. If they did go bankrupt, they'd be acquired and continue on. Maybe by Geely. Or Stellantis.

probably better to lease for that reason + the $7,500 tax credit, and then buyout if they secure funding. I just reserved the R2 after they announced access to Tesla’s supercharger network and I haven’t had a car since 2016. The R1S is nice, but $92k is steep and I imagine their demographic doesn’t need 3 rows

i believe rj is being clarity and fine tuning things to ramp up. this is their version of model 3 “production hell” moments.

yea I was just talking with a Rivian owner about this, more so about servicing the vehicle. Software I assume would be prob easier to maintain in a limited state.

Tbh, leasing might be the safest bet right now! If things go south, you're only risking your down payment, without the hassle of worrying about resale value. Did a deep dive into this when looking for our second car. Ended up with a Tesla Model Y, as there were no Rivian leases available in Connecticut.

This is a legitimate concern. I wonder…does it ever make sense to open source the computer source code if you’re a failed car company? Or is that asking for something bad to happen to former customers?

At the end of the day it’s just a battery and some motors, can just, bypass/hack your way around the Rivian BS anyway.

Why does anyone want this car? https://www.reuters.com/legal/rivian-must-face-lawsuit-claiming-it-defrauded-ipo-investors-over-vehicle-prices-2023-07-06/#:~:text=July%206%20(Reuters)%20%2D%20A,leading%20to%20unpopular%20price%20hikes.

The dependency on software updates is one of the factors that affects Rivian’s bankruptcy risk. Software development and maintenance are costly. There are also risks such as software bugs and hacking
