If I wanted to play SNES games with my kids—what’s the best set up? Buy an old SNES on eBay? Analogue Super NT on eBay? Another emulator? What about games? Goal is as close to original feel with controllers / playing on a TV.

Once our kids were old enough we just went for a switch. I’m cool with modern day graphic upgrades and such. Super Mario World and Mario Kart And then all played a Zelda game together, each kid getting a turn for 20 minutes when we played. Was an attempt to introduce video games and make them a bit more co-op. Son still plays - moved onto Minecraft and other Zelda games and the girls occasionally do animal crossing of Mario. He’ll also play the og Mario from Nintendo on the switch. Son was probably 5-6 when we started, he’s the youngest… might have been a touch too young in terms of hooking him on the dopamine of video games.

RetroPie + a couple wireless SNES controllers. You can even simulate the look of a CRT Plus you can play the Sonic games that way too 🦔

Actual SNES is pretty great if your TV can handle it. Analogue is nice if you have the cash, I guess. I definitely wish I had a CRT though

People aren’t going to like ($$$) it but this is the real answer. MiSTER Pi + retrotink4k + tapto project - modern hardware - real-world emulation of both hardware and software due to the magic of FPGA chips - will look like a real CRT on a 4k display - can make an NFC card physical game library which is badass

Nintendo switch - hdmi to RCA Monitor cable- and then look for the oldest 90s tv you can find. The switch has SNES games as a bundle basically, but it is like a monthly subscription. If you don’t want that, raspberry pi with emulator retropie, and also above set up with hdmi-RCA connector-old tv https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/

Switch is easy. RetroPie is more fun. I built a cabinet with one inside.

3 ways to go Hardcore: Buy an old refurbished SNES and buy a rear projection tv to match with it. Or buy the Sharp Snes and TV in 1 SF1 tv (which will cost you an arm and a leg - image attached) Pros: Cool Cons: Buying new cartridges Midground: Buy the SNES classic. Comes with a good number of games inbuilt. Pros: Authentic feel, convenient Cons: Not using cartridges Modern: Sign up to the Snes online library via your Nintendo switch Pro: No inventory needed. Use existing tech. Cons: Bot classic controller. Online games can be removed from library at any time.

Nintendo people were aware that millennial nostalgia will make them want to play SNES with their kids someday so they put it all in a bundle in the Switch. It supports HDMI and all kinds of external controllers.

TBH can't go wrong with any of the options people have listed. As always the most hardcore path will involve the most work/cost (CRTV, Analogue Super NT or RetroN, actual cartridges). I have both the Switch and the Mini, as well as a hacked Sony PSP turned retro emulator decades ago. The Switch is great if you just want to beat games when you have time or traveling. The Mini is actually great for the overall old-school feel of the controllers and dealing with cables as annoying as it is has a certain nostalgic charm.

For the closest to original get an SNES classic on eBay for around $80.

Easiest is just to use a Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Online subscription that has a game emulator, provided that the emulator has the games to want (there are very many) This assumes that you aren't trying to find an old CRT TV etc https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/super-nintendo-entertainment-system-nintendo-switch-online-switch/?srsltid=AfmBOoro-5EWrbEwADyP9EFVxQ4KSejOsIJcwV3-5-cMnemHTUkFYnUR

SNES classic is the way to go. Similar controllers and look. If you have a tv with RCA inputs and old SNES would be good, but RCA is getting hard to find.
