i would've never gotten into tech if i didn't get my mba nobody in my family, personal, or professional network knew anyone in SV, Tech, SF, etc and w/o the forced serendipity of taking classes w genuinely intelligent, interesting, and kind dev's + operators I'd likely be managing a factory in the midwest somewhere rn

Do one on a college degree I think it’s counterproductive. Especially if you wanna work in crypto. Just start building

I really like her breakdown of insiders vs outsiders and learning the culture and language of business. That’s a neat take.

Made sense for me. Was my third career change. Got required credentials/licensure to be an educator in my state. My program included a teaching residency that provided invaluable practical knowledge of classroom management.

If you want to be a good employee, get an MBA. If you want to be an entrepreneur, fail quickly and learn from people who didn’t get MBAs.

This podcast has a great interview with a founder who sold her company and then went and got an MBA. Really interesting. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/279-staying-indie-vs-raising-vc-getting-an-mba/id1206165808?i=1000612718746

Or get a job in a lean startup where the leads have MBAs and learn while working 💁‍♀️ Of course, not that easy to do either.

While I was scaling a dept, I earned my masters simultaneously. Opportunity cost was my free time. I got my M.S. in Global Ops Mgmt with an emphasis in Tech Systems. Kinda like a tech-focused MBA. It was grueling to do both at once but I'm glad I did it. https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/est/masters/programs/msgtm

I would add "Live/work in country X" as part of the "Career Shift" reason in your article. I got an MBA at a West Coast school because I had always wanted to live and work in the Bay Area. Getting an MBA was the most effective ways to achieve this.

I skipped MBA and went straight for a DBA. It’s challenging though, some of the basics from an MBA would help, but nothing you cannot do and learn without one. For your consideration @dwr.eth

i also recommend a minor in ethics & philosophy . social psychology . regenerative ecology . nothing like a good well rounded education that looks beyond the bottom line . in short supply these days .
