What's the de facto process for token ticker symbols these days? i.e. how do prevent collisions? How does it work across Ethereum vs. Solana? Is CoinGecko the loose consensus canonical source of truth?

dexscreener is the main resource most people use for all tokens cultural consensus is by and large the source of truth

Tons of overlap lately especially in the memecoin arena. Even the Farcaster DEGEN was like the 3rd or 4th token by that name listed on CoinGecko. And that’s to say nothing of trading pairs with unlisted tickers. DOG has this problem now. When in doubt (aka always) check the contract address

the source of truth is *new pairs + chain* filter on dexscreener followed by refreshing the list for price action every 6/24 hours

Based on our experience with NFT launching I’m assuming the process is usually 1) Legit project announces new unique token & ticker 2) 1000 scammers create clones of that and no site does anything to battle this 🫠

Not de facto yet but TKN is working on some interesting solutions here. https://tkn.xyz/

I generally check coinmarketcap and make sure there's not a collision in the top 1000.

there could be a million $degen, you should never look only at the name but the address, chain and other factors to decide if it's the "real" deal

Dexscreener is my source of truth these days. CoinGecko pretty good about having everything once it gets established but volume and FDV of a pair on Dexscreener is what I generally consider canonical

De facto - first come first serve. Typically reference to CMC and Coingecko before coining your token name. As there is no centralized listing authority, unless there is a global listing DAO or hybrid one, name collision will persist.

I see a lot of people just referencing the contract address to avoid collisions you hear "what's the CA" more than "what's the ticker" these days
