In retrospect, decentralized social network has been terrible framing for Farcaster. Two recent frames that are better: 1. Farcaster is an economy — social network + crypto wallets, small but high GDP per capita, h/t @woj.eth @luc 2. Programmable social — X APIs are dead, Farcaster APIs are constantly getting better, h/t @six It's still (mostly) decentralized under the hood, but lean into the things that it's really good at relative to the competition.

Also credit to @betashop.eth @phil for being early to onchain transactions as the "thing" that makes it different. Still not convinced that transactions themselves are as interesting social. But they create the meta for the social network.

I think part of it is that it's very hard to pass the crypto purity tests for decentralization Some researchooor will be arguing with you in perpetuity about some edge case where you're not ackshually decentralized But money? Yeah, it's very easy to tell if you made money or not. Far easier value prop to "prove"

Decentralization is a layer of trust that sets the foundation for the economy and the programmability. Building an economy and programmability on top of a centralized network is possible but you'll likely go the way of Facebook platform, Twitter and Reddit APIs.

Love these narratives. I definitely feel theirs room for innovation with both. Regarding number 2, have you guys been looking at what BlueSky offers re APIs. I’m curious how that compares as I haven’t seen many developers building stuff on that.

brilliant. unfortunately nobody wants to buy decentralization (until its too late) and everyone likes to fight about it (myself included)

Seems to be working as an alright frame for Bluesky, though they have much less crypto focus.

Isn’t it exactly what Lens was (is), social network + crypto wallet ?

I feel like "economy" is even worse tbh. It absolutely doesnt tell me what it is without actual further explanation. I like programmable social, but it misses the the whole decentralized aspect. Agreed though that right now, what's happening on Warpcast relates more to programmability than decentralization, but that's because programmability has more impact on UX, hence UA, than decentralization.

The best framing is that it makes you friends and money.

programmable social is stickier it feels and will easily incorporate the idea that it enables a farcaster economy, w things you can easily point to that verifies both points but 2. really hits the value prop imo

The thinking for me shifted a while ago here. Probably post frames and when growth stalled. I realized that despite the lack of growth, there was still economic activity happening internally because it could my first co was sending USDC by facilitating b/n Product teams and UX participants. Bountycaster, Airstack etc. Had this convo with @altmbr over dinner at FarCon as well.

Good on you for being willing to admit you were wrong + change your mind in public I like both of these frames, and thing one begets the other By building programmable social, you unlock a budding economy No one else has that - and I think it will be hard for them to catch up

Just like Ethereum, the technical narrative (sufficiently decentralized social network) only works if there’s a “cultural” narrative that fixes that. Ethereum thrives because.. it doesn’t work, but it’s highly decentralized So the narrative is “let’s find ways to make it work, stating the fact that the decentralized nature cannot be touched”. Makes sense?

both relate to what has happened here so far this year. for me programmable social already implies some form of economic layer as well, i like it
