the answer is two-fold: we love the campy tone, the "Adamic superman", the iconic dialogue with instant memetic value, the constant Red Queen's Race of power creep, and other memorable shonen tropes bundled in. tune in next week for the second part of my answer!

i had to re-write this cast 3 times because i made a mistake each time but: inverse sub law DBZ sounds better DUBBED than subbed*, which is an absolute outlier

Because as a young male about to go through puberty, all you really wanted was to go Super Saiyan. Also, Goku is the most wholesome hero of all time.

I don't think it aged fantastically - the grunting and staring sequences are brutal and the story is about as vanilla as it gets. But the moves and power ups were just so cool. Also, the good guys always won through hard work or friendship and the English dub was great.

Akira Toriyama is one of the most iconic character designers ever. Look at Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, etc. in the gaming space.

Because it's awesome, however while the manga is a masterpiece, the anime is soulless by comparison

Back in the 90s in US media, the antagonists were always bad just because they were inherently evil. Basically every protagonist other than Goku in the Dragon Ball series started out as an antagonist who gained depth and was eventually befriended by Goku. Kindness/understanding as a superpower was a refreshing message.

It’s a classic. Dragon Ball has been around for nearly 40 years, older than Pokemon! Like Ghibli, it was many people’s intro to anime; it also helped take Shonen mainstream internationally. DBZ was huge on Toonami too, the dub was recorded in TX, and the soundtrack featured Panteraβ€”people were into that.

It was airing during millennials childhoods before streaming and online piracy became prevalent so for a lot of people it was the first thing you'd see on TV in the morning (Brazil) or in the afternoon (America)
