Back in the 90s in US media, the antagonists were always bad just because they were inherently evil. Basically every protagonist other than Goku in the Dragon Ball series started out as an antagonist who gained depth and was eventually befriended by Goku. Kindness/understanding as a superpower was a refreshing message.
