on today's Farcaster dev call @dwr.eth repeatedly stated that the #1 priority is to improve the quality of content on the network I think he's wrong. Let me tell you why. (disclosure: I told Dan i was going to write this. i hope it spurs some debate) the #1 most important priority is for Farcaster to become more onchain "quality content" already exists in other places and there's no reason or benefit for it to come to Farcaster unless there's some uniquely onchain elements that vastly improve it and tbh most of the content that gets lots of engagement on CT is polarizing debates that the FC community hates the world doesn't need another place to yap about the NBA; it does need better ways to wager, play fantasy games, get access to bts content the world doesn't need another place to yap about what you cooked; the world does need more ways for foodies to get rewarded for sharing great recipes the way to win is by using onchain to change the paradigm and lure people in with the benefits as they emerge

What will drive retained daily active users if not for quality content? Examples of "only on Farcaster" that exists today that is driving retention right now? Sign ups?

Nawww @dwr.eth is right. Content is king. The world doesn’t give a shit about chains. We all just trying to survive and need an escape from it all. Plus, humans are inherently co-dependent. We need to connect and interact with one another with the least amount of friction possible. I don’t cast about crypto in general cause I believe there’s hope with channels + common interests. The blockchain + crypto stuff is a turn-off to most people. And for good reason.

nah moat is in quality content liquidity, not in financialization finances can be added as a layer on top but that doesnt create good content by itself social networks are about entertainment, quality content creates entertainment

i personally feel what fc has done so far is the path, it’s leaned in both onchain as well as created cozy corners via channels, so continuing to prioritize both makes a lot of sense a few reasons i can think of as to why i show up daily 1. i want to see what’s being built on the cutting edge onchain (alpha) 2. i have formed relationships w many ppl on the app who i interact w almost daily 3. i have financial incentive to be here 4. i’m building onchain myself 5. i see incredible art/photography on here every day 6. i enjoy the randomness of fc i think many ppl consistently show up bc of 2 and 3, if big into crypto then also 1 and 4 2 is possible offchain, but it sucks on most other social, fc is unique here 3 is only possible onchain, with more community incentive infra being built out rn such as rounds i think incentives only possible on fc will drive more users, creatives, and builders, which will lead to better content as those incentives systems improve, which will drive more incentives, etc

disagree. What farcaster needs is to help people willing to put in the effort to build communities on Farcaster win. This probably looks like these people putting in lots of time and work to manually curate/build/use tools around channels and in return earning $ now + converting users better + reaching more people, and the potential for $$$$ later when their community is worth something. This might look like frictionless subscription onramps to channels. Also potentially financial (give people the zora referral fees, tokens, manual algo boosts, ...) + status/distribution (rec follower algo)

as a content creator migrated over from web2 world I find myself in a bit of a dilemma vast majority of fc users are here for onchain activities with speculative elements minority are friends who vibe i continue to share what appeals to the minority and scratch my head about what would appeal to the majority

I think you are setting this up as an either or, when its really an all of the above. The honest truth is that most people don't care about onchain when it comes to social, they want entertainment and engagement and to be part of a community. That being said there does need to be technological edge, a level up that drives people to the platform as well. But the content and engagement needs to interplay with it to give it a true advantage. I think having content as a 1 and onchain/tech as a top 3 makes sense. Its all being achieved at the end of the day. ✌️ 😁

You are not wrong, @dwr.eth is not wrong either. Why not a combination of both quality content that is ONCHAIN. Taking the NBA section, for example. Well, we could create a livestream here in Farcaster(content) and at the same time building a betting site(onchain) using tokens (Tn100x, Degen) you could also say that in every bet a user could earn notatoken. I agree that a quality content is a "must" inorder to on-board more social users. But what really encourage a user to come is their curiosity about new things (onchain). Corroborate this 2 element and we can see massive growth within the App. 🤝

I totally agree with you that quality content is already on every social media platform. What makes farcaster different imho is the ability of being rewarded for your content And also the idea of getting motivated to do better because most of the people here already have projects or building new ones I was posting art to the void on X and IG But here if it's a small reward on your cast . It's wonderful that someone can reward you on your content We just need more content to retain users and import new ones

Disagree. Quality conversations and friendships with those people were exactly what made Farcaster’s community so good in the beginning, and the more we continue to financialize FC the more that community will erode.

It’s honestly upto power badge holders what gets rewarded. If majority farming accounts hold the power badge, that’s what we’ll see more of here because that’s what they’ll engage/foster. If however, more “quality content” kinda folks hold power badges, that’s what we’ll see more of.

content sparks conversations. conversations spark connections. connections spark discovery. discovery sparks actions. the onchain activities we do on farcaster are much more fun because of the fact that the effort between discovering something and acting on it is more seamless than what we experience on crypto twitter, telegram, or discord. right now we're in a weird state where the people whose content/creations spark those conversations have not completely migrated to farcaster. this is because their audience are split between the two platforms. I don't have the answer on the how - but i do agree with the objective of having higher quality content and that achieving that will unlock the next wave of growth. With a caveat. quality content that crypto natives are interested in. In short to mid term, I see expanding the scope to make the app attractive for non-crypto natives as a distraction. our 2 sats. p.s. apologies for typos, mis-articulation etc. its 1:10 AM here. p.p.s loved this post.

I've been trying to understand where the onchain connecton starts and ends for many features, or even just decentralised features, and it isn't always clear. For example peep.eth back in the day had onchain ID and IPFS stored content, here it seems image uploads just go straight to a web2 by default?
