I’m contemplating leaving a cushy W2 job to take a serious run at something I’ve been envisioning for a decade, and is now technologically possible. Convince me not to.

only reason not to, is if you dont have 12+ months expenses of cash on hand have a good amount of cash runway and make sure you dont have many responsibilities (like kids)

It’s gonna be hard. Are you used to hardness? Or did you have it all cushed out of you?

If you look for problems you’ll find problems. Our brains are designed to look for danger. Security, health/dental, stress, debt, long hours, kids might not get the best ‘stuff’, etc If you have young kids. This might be one of the last seasons in your life you will have the energy/will/runway to do a startup. consider validating with LOIs, prototype, confirming the ‘big problem’ you’re solving for

Such click bait! But in seriousness, I think it entirely depends on your family situation. If there is a way to do it with the risk managed in a way that feels comfortable for you and your partner, then 100%

Do it. It’ll be hard. You’ll miss the stability. You’ll feel the pain of failure. You’ll feel what it feels like to truly care about your work. You’ll feel unreal highs of success. Go do your life’s work.

did the leap of faith w/ family, no kid, ask urself: 1. is the idea partly validated? 2. Does ur family have enough savings for 5x yearly living cost w/ no income, take housing, debt, health insurance, etc. all into consideration 3. Know that even if u are doing something u envision and strongly believe in, there will still be things u hate doing but have to do in order to achieve ur vision, and u are ready for it.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Some things you can never know until you dip your feet in it. As for envisioning it, "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face."

This is the bull run talking. Start the thing on the side. Make a landing page / see if it’s worth a fuck. Nothing is stopping you from throttling back your W2 gig
