On this day in music, July 29, 1965, The Beatles premiered ‘Help!’ at the London Pavilion. The movie’s soundtrack is The Beatles 5th studio album. One year later (1966) John Lennon said ‘We’re bigger than Jesus now’ during an interview, causing outrages and media storm.

Zelensky spoke today at the NATO summit and DC and made clear what had been implicitly known: The fate of his country at war depends on the outcome of the U.S. election this November. The GOP is hostile to Ukraine and sympathetic to Russia for ideological reasons and out of mere spite towards perceived Democratic indulgence of the Ukrainian war effort. NATO plans to announce an “irrevocable” pathway for Ukraine to join the alliance in hope that this will protect Ukraine no matter what Trump may do in office. Yet NATO remains primarily dependent on America as its largest army (second is Turkey) and biggest provider of arms and intelligence support. Until the EU ramps up defense spending and become master of its own security member states — not just Ukraine — will be at the mercy of events in Washington when defending against an increasingly threatening world on its peripheries. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/07/08/nato-ukraine-membership-irreversible-washington-summit/74300582007/

My hot take re "too much investment in infra": there's too much investment in *some kinds of infra* and not enough in others, and what's actually going on is, people want to invest in "the casino" but still feel good about themselves, so they invest in the subset of infra that gets spillover profits from the casino.

A shooting occurred at Donald Trump's voter mobilization event on July 13, injuring the Republican presidential candidate. Sources at the scene said at least eight gunshots rang out when Mr. Trump just began his speech to a crowd of supporters in the city of Butler, Pennsylvania. According to local media, Mr. Trump was injured in the right ear area, before being protected and escorted from the podium by Secret Service agents. A spokesman for the US Secret Service confirmed that Donald Trump is now safe. The shooting left one spectator at the election rally dead and another person in critical condition. The gunman was neutralized and died.

Orban says Trump will 'solve' the war in Ukraine — Politico 📍After meeting with Donald Trump in Florida, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, apparently referring to the war in Ukraine, said they discussed "ways to achieve peace." 📍Orban added: "The good news of the day is that he [Trump - ed. note] is going to solve this problem!". 📍 On the social network TruthSocial, Trump agreed with Orban, writing, "There has to be peace, and as soon as possible. Too many people have died in a war that should never have started!". 📍Reminder that before meeting with Trump, Orban met with Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky.
