I was devastated by the WNC floods last year. Seeing the LA fires, I intellectually feel a similar sadness. But emotionally, I feel more detached since I’m less connected with the land Perhaps we must viscerally feel the anguish of climate volatility before we can solve it. Ie. it may be a crisis of the heart, not the mind

climate volatility is a long-term problem that will take years, if ever, to reverse completely; we must focus on practical, tactical solutions to allow humans to better endure and survive this volatility. unfortunately, the environmentalists and the tactical problem solvers have long been at odds in LA.

The physical and economic damage is relatively quantifiable. The cost of the mental anguish is not. It may be the something that weakens it... but it might also be what wakes us from our slumber and creates a more cohesive 'wartime' culture.

Incredibly sad, billions of dollars in damages so many people just lost everything they own. Their entire lives are turned upside down. My mother's house burned down a few years ago it's devastating

100% agree with that last part. Empathy (as a population, not individually) is a lie, people need to experience things in order to care.

I’m nervous about mudslides that frequently follow these fires. Once we get rain there’s no vegetation left to hold the dirt down.

human nature to not feel something as viscerally until it directly impacts you. if more people understood this, the world would look very differnt

I've felt very similar about this event compared to Helene. It is heartbreaking to look at before and after photos of specific places

really powerful thought, connecting emotionally might be just as important as understanding intellectually.
