I mourn the loss of decorum At one point, the society was functional and decorous. As we became dysfunctional, we used decorum as a veneer to hide the ugliness Now it's mask off, and everyone from the beggar to the king speaks and behaves in a vulgar manner It signals a further fall until we find grace once again

Interesting to think as a cost of an increase in individual freedom

lmao i was literally just talking about this today in groupchats i believe it to be cyclical though. current meta is "i can say whatever you want freedom blah blah blah" but attention is fickle people get tired of it as it's all they see, and they get attracted to whoever packages up decorum to be a desirable lifestyle trend

"at one point" what was the peak of this hypothetical decorous society? 1900? 1950? and are we talking global society or the United States?

Do you think we can find grace? The optimist in me wants to say yes. The pragmatist in me says Ray Dalio makes a compelling case for no. https://youtu.be/0j1gcGD5DrA?si=a7zuWi1fSIn_xiLs

mask off szn We swung too far in the one direction around decorum masking a host of issues and dysfunction This is a natural reaction to that. Itā€™s ugly, volatile and depressing but Iā€™m hopeful that weā€™ll find the balance again The person to tear something down isnā€™t usually the one to build it back up I share your sentiment but this feels inevitable in order for things to get better eventually

I have a theory.... but everyone is going to hate it. Remember when people would catch Covid, and talk about brain fog? Covid and flu, etc, apparently attack the brain as well as all the other things... and apparently the bits of the brain it normally attacks are the short-term memory area and the bit where empathy happens. Add on top of that the stress of higher prices of everything and political tensions, and pretty much everyone is having a rough time.

Seen some comments say itā€™s cyclical. Thatā€™s an understandable logic, but itā€™s also relevant that thereā€™s a non-violent revolution underway in the US right now, and traditional institutions are being replaced across the West. The challenging elites do not feel like they owe those incumbents any respect, and that is why they donā€™t operate with respect in public, which is the elitesā€™ stage.
