The "onchain" narrative is a bit weird to me because it's like flexing about being "onAWS" or "oncloud" A chain is only one part of your tech stack. In fact, having to compose everything onchain is an anti-pattern that emerged because light client support sucks Offchain is more expressive, safe, and cost efficient

it’s a pretty effective marketing and differentiating term that normal people can get behind Better than web3 or crypto or blockchain anyway

It's easy for marketing to work with IG, manufacturing a new differentiator. @jessepollak has been transparent that this resonated in market research so that is why they are running with it. I think it shows a lack of actual products TBH. It's all money plumbing, the consumer shouldn't care tbh.

Disagree: “onchain” is the whole premise of the thing. It’s closer to “online” in that the chain is what enables self custody, permissionlessness, etc. Similar to just being able to go to a website on your own vs. subscribe to a specific TV channel or order a CD ROM program.

Also “chain” has negative connotations. “Onchain” feels too close to “in chains” which is the opposite feeling this technology should evoke. It should be freeing, not chaining.

I think the term has its place. When cloud storage first became a thing, "in the cloud" meant it was resilient (not lost if your PC died) and accessible from anywhere. That's the same with "onchain". Onchain doesn't mean "better in every way", it just means impervious to loss or counterfeiting and globally accessible.

I think there's some similarity between onchain and decentralized. You don't need decentralization if you're building another LOB internal app. You also don't need onchain for most apps. Decentralization is harder than centralized. Onchain is harder than off. Use the right tool for the job.

I find myself stepping on the term often. I will swap in open when talking to potential customers and that's an equally useful term relative to them.

Onchain has many implications. One of the biggest I rarely see mentioned is that it’s “publish once, use everywhere.” When you publish something onchain, which simply means you’ve published to a publicly-owned database, every app in the world can connect and use that data. It’s the opposite of distribution.
