I put β€œsave just to save” but I guess I’m not sure if retirement is a specific goal or not

I have auto allos for several savings accounts that are general - big purchases or travel or gifts - without specifics in mind. The buckets help me budget for things I spend the most on. And they help me say yes. Last minute trip with a friend? Sure, because I have money set aside to spend guilt free for trips. Sister needs a loan? Sure, because I have money set aside for gifts. Etc.

Back when I had more to put into savings, I would save for different buckets-- One was for a new computer, one for vacations, one for christmas and gift giving, and another for emergencies and taxes. Now... I just have one "bucket" because it is usually just what comes up first gets the money and the rest have to just wait, it is what it is rn.

Both, but I guess emergency savings is technically a goal too.

At our best we typically run savings of 6 mo living expenses + have an additional set aside for household β€œemergencies” + annual funds for vacation and the holidays. Then typically a larger fund for big items - a new roof, car down payment etc, additional travel etc. These are the β€œknown” items in nearish future. income varies from year to year, so some year’s contributions don’t always get topped up and some years they do.
