React was a mistake

(I honestly like React but about 30 frontend thinkbois are gonna like this if i say it)

Dependency lists are a level of abstraction that app authors just shouldn’t need to care about.

Solid, Vue, Svelte and many others simply internalize them. Easier learning curve, simpler mental model, less room for error, lots of developer time saved.

It’s not like I really understood useEffect in the first place but with the advent of ai coding assistants im afraid I will never have to

I dunno. I'm sort of tired of this take. 

The effect fires when something in the dependency array changes. It's not really not that bad, and it shouldn't be used much anyways.

The only practical use I've had for useEffect is code that really only should execute once at startup. (In my case, initializing sqlite and syncing data from a server.) I'm sure it can do other things that are great, but I've never needed them.

It feels strange to need a special hook for that.

componentWillReceiveProps was the real mistake.
