The "fox vs hedgehog" metaphor is incredibly confusing. I keep thinking "fox = hunter = single-minded on one target" vs "hedgehog = a thousand spikes" (also, "hedging" feels like the opposite of single-goal focus), and then I check and apparently it's the other way around.

It makes a lot more sense in the context of tricksters and folklore. If you haven’t seen this, I bet you’d enjoy it. (He gets a little lost in his own prose at times, but it’s a great survey of the global mythos of entropy bringers) https://www.amazon.com/Trickster-Makes-This-World-Mischief/dp/0374532559

The trick is to remember their attack and defense behaviors. Hedgehogs curl up into a ball with spikes out. Foxes keep darting around their target trying to find an attack vector. A mnemonic image is a rolled up hedgehog with a fox darting around it.

I’ve always found Dani Rodrik’s framing resonant from an economics perspective https://drodrik.scholar.harvard.edu/files/dani-rodrik/files/regulation_summer_2016.pdf?m=1466607929

Same. Need to remember Sonic characters to get it right Sonic (hedgehog) goes really fast in straight lines Tails (fox) is better to explore terrain with his flying

Goes to 7th century BC Archilochus. The cultural environment has evolved quite a bit since then, no wonder it is confusing to us. "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing."

Hedgehog = a single, universal organizing principle, they relate everything to a single vision (like Plato's theorems of forms) Fox = explorers, they pursue many ends often unrelated or contradictory (like Aristotle) It is similar to Timothy Gowers’ “two cultures of mathematics", Freeman Dyson's "Birds and Frogs".
