Do you think the correlation here is just wealth, or is there a personality trait effect that pushes for both (or some third thing)? https://mobile.twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1596928369782059008

Personality and skill trait, wealth impacts, not determinent. Anecdotal, maybe a measure of avg, Q1 almost daily, Q2 mind contribution was ~zero. Crypto proj are mind intensive, now my Q1 is ~zero. Q2, not direct, mind deeply invested. Wealth has had minimal impact through shifts, has helped, primarily accelerant.

I think we are sorely in need of more demographic studies into what we loosely define as “crypto builders”. This would give us a sense of what is the ideology, proclivities, ethics, and ethos of the people who are building this industry. And what are their motivations.

can you explain your thoughts on the wealth correlation? imho the greatest correlation here may be community. a strong predictor of adult activity level is sport club/group participation. crypto offers the camaraderie of a sport club without the activity. this could explain why the delta between #2 and #3 is so big.

probably a general trait about risk that influences both (also, age)

As someone in the Y/Y camp, and speaking from first-hand experience, us ADHD-type brains tend to seek out the novel. Crypto contributions are exciting and complement hyperfocus ADHD characteristics; outdoor kinesthetic activities are incredible non-right-angle experiences that satisfy hyperactive impulses. Both are fun

1. The privilege/wealth of being able to take risks 2. Demographically skews toward the average interest set of a 20 or 30-something man

1-Yes- 10KM is an easy number. I walk a lot, so min 10KM is my weekly goal 2-Yes- and credit to you, I am not quite involved from DAO Governance side. Come say Hi on Optimism Gov.

10K+ run feels like the outlier here. Equipment not necessary (although certainly helpful!) Would be interested to see if there was a correlation between endurance sports/athletes and building in crypto - given the long term mindset needed for both. 😅

I think the part that says more than 10k introduces too much noise to derive meaning of results. Too many people would say yes to that.

If you are in the military Q1 should be yes for running. Important to note that the military is a socialist organization. So despite broad socioeconomic status basic needs are met. That’s why Soldiers buy Dodge Challengers at a 26% APR. Q2: Veterans in Digital Assets (VIDA) demonstrate a significant pool say yes.

“significantly contributed to a crypto project” I wonder if this is subject to the same gender bias that we see with job requirements. Women only answer if we meet all, men answer if they meet some. I hesitated to say yes to Q2 because I tend to downplay my involvement but after honest reflection I said yes.

I’d argue cultural - and that it’s tech generally more so than crypto specifically. Working in abstractions doesn’t give a lot of opportunity to signal desirability. High intensity physical activities do.

I think 10k walk/run is a huge outlier here. It contrasts greatly with the others: high-$ barrier to entry hobbies. - That said, I think there’s a strong correlation btwn those with disposable income and crypto maxis. A lot of the market is “house money,” either because they already had it or bought bitcoin/ETH

Wealth & Age Skiing, snowboarding, surfing, sailing & diving tend to be rather high-cost sports — usually funded for young people by their parents who’ve had half a lifetime to build wealth, or those with their own wealth (which has become more accessible via crypto)
