I'm seeing lots of praise of this from YIMBY/urbanist ideological grounds (which I fully support), but also I personally spent months living in buildings like this in China and I quite enjoyed it. https://twitter.com/Rainmaker1973/status/1720816222529613960

Many Chinese people wouldn't enjoy living in "pigeonholes" if given the option of living in single houses.

In the months you lived in buildings like that, did you have much contact with others living there? How did you perceive the social interactions from people living there? Is it more like "one big community" or is everyone just for themselves? Probably something in-between - I guess?

There seems to be growing recognition that these tall towers with local services are, counter intuitively, a very sustainable way to live b/c they free up so much land for green space. Was initially quite perplexed by the sight of 6-8 storey towers in rural China, coming from Australia where we sprawl with abandon.

I support these near-arcologies structures but I do wish they had more green and plant life. Just having a single green wall on my apartment has attracted bees and bird nests and has changed significantly the habitat for fauna. The original vision for Habitat 57 still seems futuristic in that sense.

In Singapore we provide these in townships because land is so scarce that we have to do mix-used developments 11% of singapore is just road 8% is public housing By minimising travel we dont need to have so many cars too

I completely see the appeal too Wouldn’t consider it at the moment, but it reminds me of Corbusier, who planned and build vertical villages type buildings
