Question: do we really need message history for all digital communications? It seems like the default for most chat/comms apps (with the exception of FC DCs). IRL interactions often have no history or record except what we remember

I personally am very attached to memories, I spend a good amount everyday where I scroll past my old archives on messages, photos, insta or snap to relive certain memories.

I am thankful for all of my old messages with my mom because she’s dead and I can’t have any more conversations with her. I like being able to see conversations we had.

Relate to this question. An obsession with owning our identity / all posts etc just makes me think of all is old people and our physical photo albums (owned identity) which gather dust.

IMO everything should be recorded and stored in perpetuity forever Will unlock massive benefits as data to train personal AGI assistants

This is in part a personality type and part a feature. Being able to favourite / store / sync route messages is useful. “Save this to my notebook tagged by the person or channel” I think ephemeral will come to be seen as useful to not be overwhelmed by a noisy archive.

Snapchat built an entire platform on ephemeral experiences, parts of which (stories) went on to become overused hammers in the industry

I like being able to look through past convos on messaging apps. Have gotten annoyed when I look back and the messages are gone

This is why I kind of like BeReal it’s like my mini rollup journal where I can look back to what I was doing at a certain moment or day

I am a fan of DMs that I can toggle to permanent/vanish mode inside the same thread. I have a long running DM thread where I have been analyzing/discussing a topic with a friend. In between we also shoot the shit. Toggling between gives me the ability to save what’s important. However would love a better UI for it.

I'm a big fan of roll-ups. I do a version of this in my personal life, where I journal at the end of every day for 5 minutes. Every week, I look at what happened every day, and note the highlights and low points. Every month, I look at the weekly, and every year I look the monthly.
