One of the biggest censorship vectors for blockchain protocols is RPC / lack of light clients. This is solved by more P2P-ish data transfer (eg IPFS, Farcaster Hubs, ATProtocol PDS), but this is also a UX barrier: running servers on phones, at home, etc is hard and potentially pricey.

In protocol terms, you don’t opt out of SMTP storing and forwarding email. An email client or hosting service would have its own ToS, some of which depends on what its jurisdiction is.

Operating systems = protocol layer. For Apple and Google, accounts, storage, and payment are included. Windows ??? Legacy install base. Apple bundles user data + synch. Cross-platform? Good luck! There ARE new opportunities for “OS” layers opening up. Not sure who has the patient capital to go for it.

Game publishers have moved to building in house gaming engines. That’s the protocol layer. They use a studio to development IP into a game. That’s a full stack app, including a client. DLC and modding tools can extend that app. Frames, alt clients. Publishers also provide accounts & payment.

The next boss for Farcaster-the-protocol is 1M DAU @dwr.eth is calling his shot at the final boss of 10M DAUs Some paths to get there: proto apps that go beyond microblogging and country specific growth (these can be venture sized) One layer up, vibrant dev community around primitives.

Concrete example: @owl @depatchedmode and I decide to do a job listings type. We can include a body (so that it shows up in all clients) but we want to store jobs on FC. So we make our own little JSON payload and stick it in MESSAGE_TYPE_EXTRA Others are welcome to adopt same … or not! @horsefacts.eth

Fun story: I completely forgot I bought the founders edition when the company had a different name 2 years ago. The company is a public benefit corp, runs on non Google Play store Android.

We grew the Drupal community year over year from 40 people -> 200 -> 500 -> 1500 Above 300-500 you start needing long lead times to get venue and hotel availability. Bursaries, paying speakers, sponsor representation, “no shilling” and other norms need to be set.
