This was roughly my experience building in hardware 10y ago. Some combination of less generalizable knowledge, culture that’s skews more secretive and very few at scale companies that discover the true magic https://x.com/id_aa_carmack/status/1878854976623218956?s=46

my take: the reality is that hw is simply not as generalizable as software. or perhaps the step changes are less discrete, and more continuous / stochastic because you are dealing with a lot more reality, where as sw is more deterministic (or at least it tries to be) -- i don't think the culture is secretive by default - i think software just tends to skew to very open and sharing

Same! We were just prototyping in the office all the time. And then for manufacturing we’d have to get connections and go to China and learn and monitor on the ground. @montez please fix!

True, no one knows how to do it and everyone keeps telling it is too hard to do. You just have to start and learn.

yeah you generally just have to get stuck in and learn the hard way. start ripping up circuit boards and analysing components.

I've worked with hardware startup accelerator HaxAsia and I'm responsible to launching 12 hardware projects. One of the best books existing (not perfect but still has some good info) is https://www.amazon.com/Hardware-Startup-Building-Product-Business/dp/1449371035

The challenges you've described highlight a crucial gap in knowledge sharing within the hardware industry. Embracing open collaboration might just unlock untapped potential and accelerate innovation across the board.

NDAs, Patents, Copyrights, all of that garbage has created a very uneven playing field. All the incumbents are ©heaters who use unnatural IP laws to limit their competition. If we abolish those, we'll see fabs from Alaska to Florida.

that sounds like a tough but rewarding journey! building in hardware back then must’ve been so different from today. what do you think has changed most?

Same with game design. Asked my mentor and he said there isn’t anything worth reading
