that would be ideal, but the reality is that most people use FC on mobile, and mobile devices can't p2p because apps are often terminated or paused for battery life preservation 

people will probably connect to a hub in the cloud (one they operate, or that is operated by a third party) which does the gossiping

Is the long term idea that each device running a FC client can act as a hub? Gossiping to share events etc

You’ve thought about this way more than I have, but doesn’t value accrue at the storage layer for farcaster. Is this the place where there should be a protocol fee?

What’s the vector you’re concerned about ?

Read it - looks like the proposal to prevent user spam is to do it at the network/rpc level, but how do you deal with a malicious hub? Don't fully understand how consensus works here but its possible a malicious/spammy hub could break the consensus protocol

It would be, but we need to do it in a way that doesn’t break sharding (which we want to introduce in the future to scale to 1B)

Unfortunately most “smarts” would break that since a sharded hub may not know anything about the person you are following

On replacing the oldest follow with a new one - wouldn’t it be better to allow some intelligence there? Or allow users to unfollow the most inactive person, or if you plan to use soul bound, the ones with least credibility etc?

you could write older data to an archive and keep it around in a "read only" format, but the trust guarantees around that would be different.

Are you envisioning the eventual  appearance of "super-hubs" that may be interested on storing longer spans of history? Or is the plan to make the protocol have all the hubs equal?
