Is it not common knowledge that pets-as-food in the US has a long racist history behind it?

Yeah, but its impossible to talk to this part of it, since there is precedent in other cultures to actually or historically eat dogs/cats, whatever. Its all about reinforcing the "other" but people that internalize this kind of xenophobia have layers of bias working here.

Yes, it is a very blatant racist dog whistle (no pun intended). But the people promoting it have been dropping the veil for a long time on their bigotry so I'm not at all surprised they are trotting it out at this point in the campaign.

Yeah we made fun of the Haitians all throughout high school and middle school about eating cats and doing voodoo. It’s insaaaaaaane that people are saying they’re eating cats all these years later, I thought that joke was long buried.

According to this Reddit account cats are a delicious meal in Haiti. *NSF for cat/pet lovers (seriously upsetting) **Also I love cats/dogs and would never dream of hurting one. ***If you're truly starving you'll eat anything once the hunger takes over ****The biggest deceptions/propaganda always have a seed of truth to them https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/s/nDKCCQFNHZ
