On the upper end of the spectrum, good is extremely good. Friend commented that Michelin stars likely don’t matter as much here because excellence is everywhere. I fully agree.

It’s so true. I’ve never had a bad meal there. I’ve definitely had some unexpected surprises, but nothing is mediocre. Everything is good to excellent. It’s hard to imagine unless you’ve been there.

Not only the median. The "low end" is pretty good also. You can't leave Japan without trying an egg sandwich or oden from 7-Eleven or FamilyMart
