are you not able to just stop engaging, like you need to have a breakup conversation with them because they keep seeking you out?

Try to be avoidant of them; keep greyrocking them, give them one word answers. If they ask to see you, say that you already have plans or that you are busy. If they ask for more information, just say that you're busy right now and have to go. e.g. them: Hey, wanna hang out this weekend? you: Unfortunately, I'm busy and already made plans. them: what are you up to this weekend? [either leave on read or...] you: I'm about to hop on a call for work; let's talk later bye [but never talk later; and change work to your mom or dad if it's after work hours] Then repeat this, be a broken record; eventually they won't contact you any more. If they confront you about it, just say "I've been really busy with a new project. It's taking all my focus. I'm sorry but I have to put this first." If you're comfortable, you can say, "I don't want to be friends with you anymore. Please respect my decision. This is not open for discussion. I wish you the best." << you could send it as a letter.

Just be upfront and honest with them about how you feel. They get offended or try to guilt trip you, that's their problem and you probably shouldn't be friends with them anyway.

Thereโ€™s really no polite way, unfortunately. But you should do it ASAP. Probably the best way is to tell them, but you should not expect a positive response. The easier way is simply to ghost them. Most people will take a hint and catch on pretty quickly. In any case, itโ€™s good youโ€™re doing it. Life is too short.

Take your distance, interact less, don't try to solve their problems It really depends if you have to see them often or not

there are only two options: start ghosting them or straight up tell them. none will be polite and the reaction can be aggressive but itโ€™s worth doing that sooner than later for your own sanity

Why would you be bothered about this ? Iโ€™ve come to realise that majority of negative people donโ€™t care if they hurt you or how you perceive their actions towards you, reciprocating this energy might be the best for you after all
