There’s really no polite way, unfortunately. But you should do it ASAP. Probably the best way is to tell them, but you should not expect a positive response. The easier way is simply to ghost them. Most people will take a hint and catch on pretty quickly. In any case, it’s good you’re doing it. Life is too short.
