ok maybe i'm dumb but isn't a $1 open edition kinda the same as paying 99 cents for a song on apple music circa 2009??? there are reasons we as listeners evolved past that model, incl better flexibility, variety, costs, and discovery — right? yes, crypto allows for artists to reward early fans BUT fred again and taylor swift and maggie rogers did this without crypto individual song mints could make sense for consumers who want exclusive content (ownership), supporting indie artists (patronage), permanent access, but those are the exception to the rule: the vast majority of consumers prefer the streaming model imo better model would be /hypersubs to access a curated library of $1 songs where artists get distribution through trusted musical curators instead of a centralized platform and some sort of revenue share if a listener really loves the song, they can decide to mint that individual song for $1 idk just spitballing

other reasons why $1 onchain songs > 99 cent apple music: direct artist-fan transactions (but again artists do this already w/o crypto) cross-platform accessibility (except seems far off given current landscape of music apps) there must be a media-first onchain social app for $1 onchain songs to work

ma'am you're front running next year's post: Music NFTs failed because who would've fucking thought people have moved on from buying $1 songs on iTunes and onto streaming. $1 open editions walked so onchain music subscription could walk slightly faster.

Not dumb at all! Key difference is you don't need to pay $1 to listen - you do it to support (and ideally share in the upside through token rewards). I don't think this is the end all be all and I'm very aligned with the long-term vision of onchain subs giving wider access and upside. Every era has new stars - streaming was Taylor, Justin, Post, etc. Onchain music stars have yet to happen and will probably be another evolution on top of $1 mints. I just think $1 editions are the strongest foundation to build on top of and find new means of onchain distribution. +1 to there needing to be strong social apps for the $1 editions to work! (and what we're currently buliding!) 1000 $DEGEN

Onchain fan clubs or subscriptions make much more sense for artists Fans want priority access to merch, tickets, exclusive content and tokengating these against various artist-issues NFTs like songs or /hypersub Creating an onchain club could act as essentially an open-source platform for artists & their fan bases

"imo better model would be /hypersubs to access a curated library of $1 songs where artists get distribution through trusted musical curators instead of a centralized platform and some sort of revenue share" this actually exists right now over at @catalog with their radio platform you can "cosign" a track for $1 and get a download of the file

I’m an artist and I think all artists here want to make money, the appeal of NFTs for an artist dies away if it becomes the same as churning content on social media for peanuts. I think artists should price their art however they want, there are collectors willing to buy but we need better distribution models and platform.

your hypersub idea w/ trusted music curators vaguely sounds like a Mubi for music (which i’m actually kinda into the idea!)

Streaming works better than people give it credit for (both sides of the equation) Onchain music can be interesting but feels closer to mixtapes (datpiff era) - needs to lean in to being "cult" just not the "number go up cult" imo +1 on social apps + Either the social apps need to handle onchain content better (needs to be delightful) or we need new apps that are just incredibly good at surfacing content you own or content like it Even the songs I love that I have minted I still listen to on Spotify haha

That $1 is just a token money to identify yourself as a fan onchain. It opens the doors for more fan engagement with the artist outside the traditional media players.

Would I pay for a hypersub that curates the best onchain music exceptionally well? Absolutely. But based on what I've seen, there simply isn't enough great music onchain right now to justify it. I believe the focus should be on getting our favorite artists (new or established) to distribute their music onchain, alongside other streaming platforms. Considering all the money circulating in crypto, I'm surprised that many of the world's top artists have yet to see the value in bringing their music onchain

when we talk about streaming the first thing that comes to mind for me is @superfluid could artists get streamed tokens directly from listening time onchain?

I was left thinking about this yesterday. Still feels like there needs to be some value add for minting a song when you can stream. A website fan area on with access to bonus content is scalable, you don't have to meet every fan. Otherwise only my favourite or new artists get minted as a gesture of support.

There’s no failure, I think in terms of monetization for independent artist, blockchain is the answer. There is no way you can built a sustainable music career only relying on streaming. That’s why artist really make revenue with shows and merch, etc. We just have to accept the fact that artist need to create multiple channels across all the platforms but creating a solid community where he can create a sustainable income to keep going. The audience will always find a way to support an artist they truly love. You can still listen to music for free on all web3 music platforms and if you want to support there’s the option to mint.
