can someone steel man the arguments FOR and AGAINST all non-warpcast farcaster clients integrating XMTP group messaging capabilities? (i probably should’ve done some research before casting this) cc @shanemac.eth

Most people are using Warpcast. If Warpcast doesn't support XMTP and you DM someone on a third-party app, you might never get a response.

for: - composability, broader ecosystem - killer bizdev team has network effects (seriously @shanemac.eth is a master at this and it should be something HBS grads study instead of regurgitating their normal bullshit like telling jeff bezos to sell early AMZN to barnes and noble) against: - spam controls become deeply fragmented, warpcast is easy to nerf wallet drainer dc spam (and we've had to already) - MLS for group chats doesn't work in the decentralized model, the approach they're going to use is via smart contract to stand in place as the "centralized" host, which is subject to reorgs and can be fragile (and if not, is very slow waiting for sufficient epochs) - tighter integration with other hub features, current and future (say more won't get more here 🤫)

For: easier to message people based on their ens. Can be useful for things like attribution (someone minted something you liked). Against: not really purposeful beyond that. Probably a relatively large dev lift for limited outcome I’m probably missing use cases but that’s my kneejerk response

I’ve asked this as well before but from what I recall. All the devs of all the apps/clients would need to align to use xmtp or else we would have fragmentation where some use it and some don’t. So they all need coordination for it to be a win for all or else it’s busy work for no clear win

I wonder why XMTP comes up so often in a world in which we have matrix.org.
