It's actually meant for your own privacy. The equipment in the cockpit is picking up all your sms data and the pilots get to read it and laugh at you. Sometimes it's even distracting enough to delay takeoff.

Lmaoo So many myth, the popular one in my country is “ don’t use your phone while cooking with the gas cooker” apparently the gas will “blow up” if you do😂

Pretty sure it’s not about plane blowing up or interrupting technical communications but the lack of attention if something important were to happen With lowest common denominator in mind, one would want most of the attention of most of the people.

Not a single one of YOUR planes has blown up. I remember in 2011 I was flying in a plane right behind yours and we exploded on takeoff and I was like "WTF!!!!" and the flight attendant said it's likely someone was texting on the flight before us. But they gave me a $20 voucher for airport food so I was happy.
