strong opinion, strongly held: on the whole, dating apps are worse for mental health than any other social media platforms

Probably more so for women. There has to be a better way of doing it on the internet

1000000%. Anecdotally from my friends who are still dating, Tinder has become a source of toxicity / spiralling emotionally and mentally.

Used almost all of them for a couple years. Definitely terrible for mental health, I think it also really skews perception. Ended up meeting my girlfriend IRL at a concert, so there ya go.

Near impossible to find somebody you have genuine chemistry with. All my longer term partners I’ve met IRL. Apps are a waste of time and terrible for our brains.

💯 I did meet my soon-to-be-ex-wife on a dating app. It's possible to make quality connections but sifting through all that noise might not be worth it. Especially now vs 9 years ago when I met my ex. Some apps are worse than others though.

Depends if you're trying to date or find the one imo. They can be used for both, are toxic for one but are a really good tool for the other.

I downloaded Tinder in around 2014. Deleted it after a week. Re-downloaded it lately and deleted it again.

whenever I opened a dating app, it felt like I’m shopping online for some objects. The illusion of endless choices doesn’t help to build any connection or commitment. So IRL girl here too

Never used one. My wife did, before we were married, and found some matches but never anything meaningful beyond a few dates. We met irl and she said she had a better experience from it than all men from the app. But maybe that’s just me.

I think generally agree, but Twitter/X has been a real challenge these past 2 weeks.

Even if true: I’d rather we fix the social media platforms first as you’re describing a subset of online people that are affected by this versus the majority who are affected by the suboptimal platform wars

I haven't actively dated in two years and I can't imagine what it's like since then. It's been my primary source for idk... a long time? Definitely not an experience I could handle right now.

I guess there’s the high upside of a positive experience with a dating app, which you likely won’t get with regular social media usage.
