Pretty surprising stat that Facebook usage is actually increasing for 18-29 yr old user segment -> particularly on Marketplace and Groups. Only stock in the magnificent 7 up double digits this week. https://www.mbi-deepdives.com/meta2q24/

Facebook has several things going: Marketplace & groups are irreplaceable at this point. Even subreddits couldn't stop them from becoming ubiquitous. So if you don't have FB, you miss this. Craigslist has largely died because of marketplace. It's basically old, conservative die hard on CL. Most niche web forums have migrated to a FB group. The forums still exist for historical data, but the activity happens in groups now. It works because everyone has kept their accounts active to use messenger and marketplace anyway, so 1 app instead of 100's of forums. Nobody cares about the home feed anymore, other than a place to jump into the algorithmic feed of random reels from IG and dopamine grind for awhile. That's meta's moat. Basically *everyone* made a FB account at one point. And they either kept it or deleted it and came back, because of the above needs that have become irreplaceable: a trustworthy global knowledge and local material sharing hub.

I see the appeal even as a new parent I deleted my account 5 or 6 years ago and just signed up again for the same reasons: groups and marketplace

Interesting trend, shows Facebook's adaptability and appeal to younger users.

yup — a lot of people I know still love marketplace to buy furniture and other things.

I predict meta crushes it over the next decade. I haven’t fully formulated a thesis as to why though.

i really don't see the advantage of facebook over fc/twitter. they must be kicking ass on marketing. 🤔
