Yesterday I was disappointed that my friends’ 10 year old daughter was banned from using any AI to aid her in her projects. Apparently her teacher thinks it’s too easy to cheat with it, so it’s totally banned. So I was showing her how to use ChatGPT (with her parents permission ofc), making different photos together, showing her how I use it to make candle scents and measure items. Disappointing schools are not teaching kids how to use AI, feels like they’re failing them.

The most important thing they can learn at that age is critical thinking — it’s dying right now in schools. I get why —especially at that age— they need to ban it. They’ll learn it just fine on their own. But if they have to solve a problem when the power goes out, they are screwed.

Teachers are being lazy and do not want to be creative on how to test their students.

Banning the use of Ai is totally out of place. You did a good job teaching her how to use chatgpt btw👍

Linked a video in this cast which goes into your concern @samantha. That approach by the school is short sighted and delusional. Kids are going to use A.I if teachers like it or not, so as far as I see it, schools have to find a way to adopt it into their curriculum. They can't stop the tide with a broom. https://warpcast.com/adam-/0x626e1cd8

My old academy has banned students from using chatGPT because most of them were using it for writing their essays 😂

the bigger danger—aside from less exposure to AI in a classroom setting, which I understand as a teacher—is that this encourages more close-minded views towards AI at precisely the worst time in their development. this will be the first AI-native generation in the same way that millennials grew up with the internet. the last thing teachers should be doing is injecting their own political bias into an issue rather than encouraging students to think critically and form their own perspective.

if the teacher is banning one of the most useful tools we have, all they're doing is setting up the honest kids to be left behind

This is that. I saw a more promising interview clip from brit national tv. Hosts has pretty much the same sceptical pov. The young teacher was arguing that we should accept it and assume by default that students are using AI to write essays, work on projects and so on. Her pov was that schools should update their programmes and come up with in-school practices that teach students to continue working and analysing their home work. I liked her thinking direction

100% that’s absurd. Schools are getting on board, but some are taking longer with others. That’s like telling someone they can’t use Google to find something. Instead of banning it, they need to come up with ways to integrate AI It can be used in lots of ways to help someone find a better title for something to brainstorm ideas, to spellcheck … I do agree, having it write the paper for you isn’t cool but completely banning it is ridiculous There are many AIs that can act as a tutor for kids - asking them questions so they can better understand a topic. I remember in high school having a course on how to conduct Boolean google searches
