hot take: i think most people will just use exchanges as their bridge to L2s and bridges are overrated

Quite surprising for someone running a podcast called "bankless" to say that a critical piece of a decentralized blockchain ecosystem is overrated, and ppl will (should?) use centralized entity for that. No thx, i dont want an exchange telling me how much i can bridge or from where in the world i can bridge šŸ‘Ž

That's probably true, but I still want to be able to bridge without going through an exchange.

I do this quite a bit already tbh. Drastically reduces bridge fees for OP/Base.

been here long but unfortunately yes. exchanges support most chains and very clear (fixed) withdrawal fee

Maybe in the short term, but I doubt that will be the case in the long run. Bridging should be abstracted away from the end user. (Possibly by the wallet) When that happens, you will need decentralized bridges to facilitate the actual bridging. Not CEXes.

L1 to L2 this is what I already usually do. L2 to L2 there’s no point, it’s so cheap now to bridge

i did this and Coinbase froze six figures on my already KYC'd account currently trying to get it unfrozen but i'll stick with bridges next time

Easiest way to bridge to base is buy on coinbase and send funds. Love this take!

I've been using Synapse Protocol for a while now, it's super seamless and efficient, and the fees are super low. I do think it's super sketchy the first time you use any type of bridge though...

Long deposit/withdrawal delays, way too many 2fa’s, and the odd freezing of funds. Bridges are becoming much better once you’re onchain.

I agree. But I also think as a community we should prioritize privacy and access no non-KYC ETH. Right now we don’t have tools to buy non-kyc ETH.

yes unless bridging fees across L2s are cheaper than the costs of withdrawing from an exchange

Very hot take but I get it. Most of my L1->L2 funds went through exchanges. But nearly all my L2->L2 fund went through bridges. For ETH it is just a lot cheaper to go through a CEX to an L2 than use the bridge. But if the bridge is cheap I am 100% taking it.

That’s why we integrated cross chain txs in Matcha.xyz. A user just wants to swap

I almost never bridge from mainnet if I can help it. That said, I use L2 <> L2 bridges between Zora, Base, Optimism, Arbitrum, Blast, Mode, etc. all the time. @relay has been especially good.

I agree in an L1 -> L2 scenario but with gas being cheap on L2 I see them finding their place in an L2 -> L2 landscape
