90's scifi Honorverse by David Weber is fantastic hyperdetailed military space opera https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorverse enjoyed Old Man's War by John Scalzi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man's_War 3 Body Problem is still on my list Enderverse by Orson Scott Card is goated https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ender%27s_Game_(novel_series) The Emberverse by SM Stirling is skewed towards YA fantasy/sci-fi fiction but really good https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emberverse_series

More recent than 80s scifi that I've really enjoyed Dennis E. Taylor Orson Scott Card John Scalzi Daniel Suarez Ernest Cline Andy Weir Note there's a huge gap between "scifi written in 40s-80s" and "writers creating their best work now"

N. K. Jemisin won 3 consecutive Hugo Awards for the Broken Earth series, unprecedented. The first book was in 2015.
