My son is growing up and this year he asked if the story of Passover is “real” — do we have proof any of it happened. What would be your answer?

How old is he? I’d probably say the story has elements of truth, but divert the question into the importance of the story to Judaism & the complexity of the relationship between scripture/values/history I’d hope that the answer makes him more curious What outcome would you be excited to see in him from this?

Curious - how did you end up responding here ? I don’t think there’s any “right” or “wrong” answer.

That’s complex! Love it. I would probably say it’s a generational story that has been passed down, and like all stories, it’s more about what it has to teach us than whether it is “real” or not. But my answer here would probably depend a lot on what sect of Judaism you identify with and your son’s age!

The answer really depends on his age. If very young I would say we are fortunate to have had the story passed down from generation to generation long before a time when things were written down. Young kids accept and can make up their own minds later. If older you can offer the wiseaker 20 $degen for the afikomen!
