In 2020 I said to a journalist who said that crypto had no use cases that stablecoins were incredible/amazing full of potential a bigger deal than people understand and if JUST creating a digital programmable dollar was all this ecosystem produced (it won't be) that alone would be enormous, earth shattering stuff.

People misunderstand how to market and build brands in crypto cycles, particularly among consumers. It's hard — the market drives the attention. You can't really control your own destiny with regard to growing users or reaching new audiences beyond the crypto natives who are leaned in right now. What you have to learn to accept is that you have to build right now for when the stadium lights come back on in the future, so you can ride the wave and grow then. That's the only thing you have control over.

When I started at Coinbase in 2018 this sentiment from Hayden is exactly what triggered tech journalists about crypto. In the midst of the great techlash post-2016 election, the financialization of everything freaked everyone out about what tech people wree up to even more than "election interference" and "misinformation." Capitalism was more of a bad word then than it is now. The reason crypto as a frontier technology movement is winning is because we have not backed down from an unabashed embrace of these values and the view that the financial incentives onchain platforms provide are better than *waves hands* all this.
